Canon Error E05: Cartridge / print head cannot be recognized
Also shows as: Support codes 1403, 1430, 1471, 1476 (G-series) or 1401, 1403, 1430, 1485 (TS3100 / E3100); alarm lamp flashes 5 times on PIXMA G1010 series
The printer cannot recognise a cartridge or print head. On TS3100 / E3100-type models Canon says to check that the FINE cartridge is installed properly, is the right one, and is compatible.
What to try
- Check that the cartridge or print head is installed properly.
- Check that the right cartridge is installed and that it is compatible with your printer.
- Install the appropriate cartridge if it is not.
- If the error continues, see the matching support code (for example 1403). Canon says to power-cycle and, if needed, contact a service center.
When it needs a technician
If it is the correct cartridge or print head, properly installed, and the code persists, Canon points to repair.
Which models show E05
Canon documents this code for models including PIXMA G2010 series, PIXMA TS3100 series, PIXMA E3100 series, PIXMA G3010 series.
Varies by model: The support codes behind E05 differ between G-series ink-tank and TS/E cartridge models.
First steps for any printer error
- Write down the exact code before you do anything else β similar-looking codes often mean completely different things.
- Power the printer off, unplug it for a couple of minutes, then power it back on. A surprising number of transient errors clear here.
- Open the covers and check for paper scraps, packaging material, or anything blocking the carriage.
- Check the cartridges or tanks are genuine, correctly seated, and not empty.
- Confirm the printer is plugged directly into a wall outlet, not a power strip or extension lead.
- Check your modelβs own manual β codes are model-specific, and the manual is the authority for your machine.
