Canon Support Code 1640: Ink tank may be below the lower limit line (MegaTank)

Also shows as: E60 (LCD code on PIXMA G2010-family models)

✅ Usually fixable yourself

On refillable ink-tank printers, the ink in one of the tanks may have dropped to the lower limit line.

What to try

  1. Look at the ink tanks to check the remaining ink level.
  2. If any tank is below the lower limit line, refill it with the matching color.
  3. To keep printing anyway, press the printer's Black or Color button. Canon warns this can use extra ink and may damage the printer, and the ink-level warning will stop working.
  4. To turn the warning back on, refill every color to the upper limit line, then hold Black or Color for at least 5 seconds.

When it needs a technician

Not a repair issue. Refill the tanks.

First steps for any printer error

  1. Write down the exact code before you do anything else — similar-looking codes often mean completely different things.
  2. Power the printer off, unplug it for a couple of minutes, then power it back on. A surprising number of transient errors clear here.
  3. Open the covers and check for paper scraps, packaging material, or anything blocking the carriage.
  4. Check the cartridges or tanks are genuine, correctly seated, and not empty.
  5. Confirm the printer is plugged directly into a wall outlet, not a power strip or extension lead.
  6. Check your model’s own manual — codes are model-specific, and the manual is the authority for your machine.
