Canon Error E04: Cartridge / print head not installed properly
Also shows as: Support code 1470 (G-series) / 168A (TS3100, E3100); alarm lamp flashes 4 times on PIXMA G1010 series
A cartridge or print head is not installed properly. On PIXMA G-series ink-tank models this is support code 1470. On TS3100 / E3100-type models it is support code 168A (FINE cartridge not installed properly).
What to try
- Open the cover (the top cover on G-series ink-tank models).
- G-series: push the print head locking cover, or the joint buttons, until it clicks into place. Make sure the orange label and protective tape were removed from the print head.
- TS3100 / E3100: retract the output tray, remove the FINE cartridges, check that they are compatible with the printer, then reinstall them, pushing each up until it clicks.
- Close the cover.

First steps for any printer error
- Write down the exact code before you do anything else — similar-looking codes often mean completely different things.
- Power the printer off, unplug it for a couple of minutes, then power it back on. A surprising number of transient errors clear here.
- Open the covers and check for paper scraps, packaging material, or anything blocking the carriage.
- Check the cartridges or tanks are genuine, correctly seated, and not empty.
- Confirm the printer is plugged directly into a wall outlet, not a power strip or extension lead.
- Check your model’s own manual — codes are model-specific, and the manual is the authority for your machine.
