Canon Support Code 1683: Remaining ink level cannot be detected (refilled tank)

✅ Usually fixable yourself

The printer cannot correctly detect how much ink is left in a tank, and the lamp on the tank flashes. This happens with a tank that was once empty.

What to try

  1. Replace the ink tank and close the top cover.
  2. If you choose to keep printing, Canon says you can turn off ink-level detection by holding RESUME/CANCEL for at least 5 seconds.
  3. Canon warns that printing with a once-empty tank may damage the printer and that it is not liable for damage caused by refilled tanks.

When it needs a technician

Not a repair issue. Replace the tank.

Which models show 1683

Canon documents this code for models including PIXMA PRO-100S series.

First steps for any printer error

  1. Write down the exact code before you do anything else — similar-looking codes often mean completely different things.
  2. Power the printer off, unplug it for a couple of minutes, then power it back on. A surprising number of transient errors clear here.
  3. Open the covers and check for paper scraps, packaging material, or anything blocking the carriage.
  4. Check the cartridges or tanks are genuine, correctly seated, and not empty.
  5. Confirm the printer is plugged directly into a wall outlet, not a power strip or extension lead.
  6. Check your model’s own manual — codes are model-specific, and the manual is the authority for your machine.
