Canon Support Code 1686: Ink cartridge issue / ink may have run out

Also shows as: E13 (LCD code on display-less TS / E models)

✅ Usually fixable yourself

The printer has detected an issue with one or more ink cartridges. On the matching LCD code (E13) Canon describes it as "The ink may have run out."

What to try

  1. Open the cover and replace each cartridge the printer flags. Canon recommends new, genuine Canon cartridges.
  2. Or, to keep printing or copying with what is left, hold the Stop button for at least 5 seconds to turn off ink-level detection for that cartridge.
  3. For scanning or faxing only, the same Stop-button step lets you keep scanning while the cartridges stay installed.

When it needs a technician

Not a repair issue. Replace the cartridge.

Varies by model: On TS3300 Canon refers specifically to the color cartridge; on MG3600 it refers to any cartridge.

First steps for any printer error

  1. Write down the exact code before you do anything else — similar-looking codes often mean completely different things.
  2. Power the printer off, unplug it for a couple of minutes, then power it back on. A surprising number of transient errors clear here.
  3. Open the covers and check for paper scraps, packaging material, or anything blocking the carriage.
  4. Check the cartridges or tanks are genuine, correctly seated, and not empty.
  5. Confirm the printer is plugged directly into a wall outlet, not a power strip or extension lead.
  6. Check your model’s own manual — codes are model-specific, and the manual is the authority for your machine.
