Canon Support Code 1660: Ink tank not installed / not recognized
An ink tank is missing, or the printer cannot recognise it because it is not installed or is not compatible with the printer.
What to try
- Check the ink tanks and install any that are missing.
- Make sure each tank is compatible with your printer.
- Press the printer's Stop button if you want to cancel the print job.
When it needs a technician
Not a repair issue in Canon's instructions.
Which models show 1660
Canon documents this code for models including PIXMA TS6300 series, PIXMA TR8500 series, PIXMA TS8300 series, MAXIFY MB2700 series, MAXIFY MB5100 series, PIXMA TS9500 series.
Varies by model: On MAXIFY MB2700 Canon says simply "An ink tank is not installed"; on TS6300 it says the tank "cannot be recognized" (not installed or not compatible).
First steps for any printer error
- Write down the exact code before you do anything else — similar-looking codes often mean completely different things.
- Power the printer off, unplug it for a couple of minutes, then power it back on. A surprising number of transient errors clear here.
- Open the covers and check for paper scraps, packaging material, or anything blocking the carriage.
- Check the cartridges or tanks are genuine, correctly seated, and not empty.
- Confirm the printer is plugged directly into a wall outlet, not a power strip or extension lead.
- Check your model’s own manual — codes are model-specific, and the manual is the authority for your machine.
