Canon Support Code 1600: Ink may have run out

✅ Usually fixable yourself

The printer has detected that an ink tank may be out of ink.

What to try

  1. Replace the ink tank (Canon recommends this).
  2. If you are mid-job and want to finish, press OK with the tank still installed to continue, then replace the tank afterwards.
  3. Do not remove the old tank until the new one is ready. On MAXIFY models Canon notes the machine will not run with a tank removed, even if you put the same tank back.

When it needs a technician

Not a repair issue. Canon warns that printing on in an ink-out state may damage the printer.

Which models show 1600

Canon documents this code for models including PIXMA TS6300 series, PIXMA TR8500 series, PIXMA TS8300 series, MAXIFY MB2700 series, MAXIFY MB5100 series, PIXMA TS9500 series.

First steps for any printer error

  1. Write down the exact code before you do anything else — similar-looking codes often mean completely different things.
  2. Power the printer off, unplug it for a couple of minutes, then power it back on. A surprising number of transient errors clear here.
  3. Open the covers and check for paper scraps, packaging material, or anything blocking the carriage.
  4. Check the cartridges or tanks are genuine, correctly seated, and not empty.
  5. Confirm the printer is plugged directly into a wall outlet, not a power strip or extension lead.
  6. Check your model’s own manual — codes are model-specific, and the manual is the authority for your machine.
