Rheem Water Heater Error Codes

Rheem tankless water heaters show a numbered code on the controller, while Rheem tank and hybrid heaters use a status light or a display message. Below are 34 Rheem codes across 4 model series. Each one says what it means, which series it applies to, what you can safely check, and when to call a licensed pro, with a link to the Rheem document it comes from.

The same code can mean different things on different series, so match the series column to your unit. Your unit's manual is the final word. Reviewed October 2026.

The manual lists this as Condensate Blocked: Unclog Line. The heating source defaults to the elements because of a condensate drain blockage.

When to call a pro: The manual's steps include opening the top cover and possibly replacing the condensate sensor. Call a qualified service provider for that.

Source: Rheem Electric Residential Hybrid Water Heater Use & Care Manual AP23657 Rev 01, Troubleshooting Alarm Codes, p. 32

Rheem A008: Dry fire condition detected

🧭 Check a few things first

Applies to: Rheem Electric Residential Hybrid (heat pump) water heaters, Use & Care Manual AP23657 Rev 01. Shows as: Alarm shown on the display

The manual says dry fire protection has disabled the heater because there is not enough water in the storage tank.

When to call a pro: If the code stays after the tank is full and air is purged, call a qualified service provider. The manual says other board or sensor issues would show different codes.

Source: Rheem Electric Residential Hybrid Water Heater Use & Care Manual AP23657 Rev 01, Troubleshooting Alarm Codes, p. 32

Safe first steps for any code

  1. Write down the exact code shown on the controller or the number of status light flashes.
  2. Turn the water heater power off and back on (or press the reset button the manual describes) once. If the code comes back, stop resetting.
  3. Make sure the gas supply valve to the heater is open and other gas appliances in the home are working.
  4. Make sure the cold water supply valve is fully open and hot water taps are not partly closed.
  5. Look at the outside vent terminal for snow, ice, leaves or anything blocking it (look only).

πŸ›‘ Stop and call a licensed pro if

  • You smell gas. Leave the house, do not touch switches, and call your gas utility from outside.
  • Codes for flame failure, overheating, venting or the control board that return after one reset.
  • Water leaking from the heater, the relief valve discharging, or scorching around the burner area.
