HP Error 49: Firmware communication error

Also shows as: 49 Error, 49.XXXX, 49.4C02, Turn off then on

🧭 Fixable with care

A 49 or 49.XXXX error is a critical firmware error. HP says it is often triggered by something outside the printer hardware, such as a specific print file, driver, network connection or software program.

What to try

  1. Disable wireless printing from the control panel (if equipped), turn the printer off, and unplug the network and USB cables.
  2. If you use a surge protector, remove it and plug the printer directly into the wall outlet.
  3. Turn the printer on. If it returns to Ready, print a Configuration Report to confirm it works.
  4. Check the firmware version and update it if a newer version is available on HP.com.
  5. Reconnect one connection at a time (USB first with a simple test file, then network) to find what triggers the error.
  6. If one file causes it, try a different print driver (for example PCL 5 or PCL 6 instead of the universal driver) or save the file in a different format such as PDF. If it happens when scanning, try a different resolution or file format.

When it needs a technician

If the printer does not return to Ready, or the 49 error is not limited to one connection type or file, HP says the printer needs service and to contact HP Customer Support.

Which models show 49

HP documents this code for models including HP LaserJet Pro M203, HP LaserJet Pro 400 M401, HP LaserJet Pro M701/M706, HP LaserJet P2050 series, HP LaserJet P3010 series.

Varies by model: The digits after 49 vary by model and firmware. On HP LaserJet Enterprise models, HP's 49 error article (c05026822) adds steps such as disconnecting accessories and updating firmware from the Preboot menu with a USB flash drive.

First steps for any printer error

  1. Write down the exact code before you do anything else β€” similar-looking codes often mean completely different things.
  2. Power the printer off, unplug it for a couple of minutes, then power it back on. A surprising number of transient errors clear here.
  3. Open the covers and check for paper scraps, packaging material, or anything blocking the carriage.
  4. Check the cartridges or tanks are genuine, correctly seated, and not empty.
  5. Confirm the printer is plugged directly into a wall outlet, not a power strip or extension lead.
  6. Check your model’s own manual β€” codes are model-specific, and the manual is the authority for your machine.
