HP Error 20: 20.xx memory out error
Also shows as: 20.0000 Memory out in print, 20.0001, 20.0002, 20.0003, 20.0004, 20.0006, 20.XX
The printer does not have enough memory (RAM) to process the job. The last digits show the job type: 20.0000 print, 20.0001 copy, 20.0002 scan, 20.0003 photo, 20.0004 fax, 20.0006 scan calibration.
What to try
- Turn the printer off and on again, then retry the job.
- For print jobs, try a different print driver from HP's support site. With the PCL 6 driver, use the Optimize for Raster setting.
- For copy jobs, make one copy at a time, or turn off collate when making multiple copies.
- For photo printing, use a USB flash drive with fewer files.
- Add more memory if the printer supports it.

Which models show 20
HP documents this code for models including HP LaserJet Pro M701/M706, HP LaserJet Pro MFP printers.
First steps for any printer error
- Write down the exact code before you do anything else — similar-looking codes often mean completely different things.
- Power the printer off, unplug it for a couple of minutes, then power it back on. A surprising number of transient errors clear here.
- Open the covers and check for paper scraps, packaging material, or anything blocking the carriage.
- Check the cartridges or tanks are genuine, correctly seated, and not empty.
- Confirm the printer is plugged directly into a wall outlet, not a power strip or extension lead.
- Check your model’s own manual — codes are model-specific, and the manual is the authority for your machine.
