HP Critical system error: A critical system error has occurred

HP says a critical system error with a code starting F0, A, C or E (for example F0.xx.xx.xx) can display on some OfficeJet Pro, ENVY and DeskJet printers. HP released firmware updates to address it.
What to try
- Turn off the printer with the Power button, or unplug it if it will not turn off.
- Wait one minute, plug it back in, turn it on, and wait for the Home screen.
- Update the firmware: Menu > Tools > Maintenance > Firmware > Check, or use the HP Smart app or HP Software and Driver Downloads.
- Do not turn off the printer during the firmware update.
When it needs a technician
If the latest firmware is already installed and the error continues, HP says to contact HP Customer Support for service.

First steps for any printer error
- Write down the exact code before you do anything else — similar-looking codes often mean completely different things.
- Power the printer off, unplug it for a couple of minutes, then power it back on. A surprising number of transient errors clear here.
- Open the covers and check for paper scraps, packaging material, or anything blocking the carriage.
- Check the cartridges or tanks are genuine, correctly seated, and not empty.
- Confirm the printer is plugged directly into a wall outlet, not a power strip or extension lead.
- Check your model’s own manual — codes are model-specific, and the manual is the authority for your machine.
