HP Error E1: Paper size mismatch
E1 means the paper size set for the print job does not match the width of the paper loaded in the input tray. The Resume light usually blinks with it.
What to try
- Press Resume to keep printing anyway, or press Cancel to stop the job.
- Load paper that matches the page size you want to print.
- Or change the paper size setting in your app or print settings to match the paper that is loaded.
- Print the document again.
When it needs a technician
HP treats E1 as a paper or settings issue. If the paper and settings match and the error keeps returning, contact HP Customer Support.
Which models show E1

First steps for any printer error
- Write down the exact code before you do anything else — similar-looking codes often mean completely different things.
- Power the printer off, unplug it for a couple of minutes, then power it back on. A surprising number of transient errors clear here.
- Open the covers and check for paper scraps, packaging material, or anything blocking the carriage.
- Check the cartridges or tanks are genuine, correctly seated, and not empty.
- Confirm the printer is plugged directly into a wall outlet, not a power strip or extension lead.
- Check your model’s own manual — codes are model-specific, and the manual is the authority for your machine.
