HP Error E0: Ink cartridge problem

✅ Usually fixable yourself

An E0 on the number display means one or both ink cartridges have a problem, such as a loose, damaged, taped-over or incompatible cartridge. A blinking cartridge icon shows which one: left is tri-color, right is black. Both icons showing empty while they have ink means a cartridge is not seated correctly.

What to try

  1. Make sure both cartridges are genuine HP cartridges that are compatible with your printer.
  2. Open the cartridge door, remove the cartridge shown by the blinking icon, and slide it back in until it snaps into place. Press down any cartridge that sits tilted up.
  3. Close the door and press Cancel to clear the error. If it stays, turn the printer off, wait 60 seconds, and turn it back on.
  4. Remove the cartridge again, check the number on its label, and remove any orange shipping tape over the nozzles. Do not touch the copper contacts or nozzles.
  5. If the error is still there, replace the cartridge with a new genuine HP cartridge. A cartridge still under warranty may be replaced by HP.

When it needs a technician

If E0 still shows with a new cartridge installed, HP says to contact HP Customer Support to service or replace the printer.

Which models show E0

HP documents this code for models including HP DeskJet 2800, HP DeskJet 4200, HP DeskJet 4900, HP DeskJet 2900, HP DeskJet 4300, HP DeskJet 5100, HP DeskJet 5800, HP ENVY 6000.

Varies by model: On HP ENVY 6000 and 6400 printers HP describes E0 as an unusable cartridge. Smart Tank and Ink Tank models do not list E0.

First steps for any printer error

  1. Write down the exact code before you do anything else — similar-looking codes often mean completely different things.
  2. Power the printer off, unplug it for a couple of minutes, then power it back on. A surprising number of transient errors clear here.
  3. Open the covers and check for paper scraps, packaging material, or anything blocking the carriage.
  4. Check the cartridges or tanks are genuine, correctly seated, and not empty.
  5. Confirm the printer is plugged directly into a wall outlet, not a power strip or extension lead.
  6. Check your model’s own manual — codes are model-specific, and the manual is the authority for your machine.
