Epson Error E-12: Borderless ink pad needs replacing
On EcoTank and WorkForce models, E-12 means the borderless printing ink pad needs to be replaced. Borderless printing stops, but printing with a border still works.
What to try
- Keep printing with borders; only borderless printing is blocked.
- Contact Epson support to arrange replacement; Epson says this is not a user-replaceable part.
When it needs a technician
The borderless ink pad must be replaced by Epson or an authorized Epson service provider.
Which models show E-12
Epson documents this code for models including EcoTank ET-4810, EcoTank ET-2840, WorkForce WF-2930.
Varies by model: On the portable WorkForce WF-110, E-12 means the maintenance box is full; turn the printer off and replace the maintenance box yourself.
First steps for any printer error
- Write down the exact code before you do anything else β similar-looking codes often mean completely different things.
- Power the printer off, unplug it for a couple of minutes, then power it back on. A surprising number of transient errors clear here.
- Open the covers and check for paper scraps, packaging material, or anything blocking the carriage.
- Check the cartridges or tanks are genuine, correctly seated, and not empty.
- Confirm the printer is plugged directly into a wall outlet, not a power strip or extension lead.
- Check your modelβs own manual β codes are model-specific, and the manual is the authority for your machine.
