Epson Error W-12: Ink cartridge installed incorrectly
On newer Expression and WorkForce models, W-12 means an ink cartridge is not installed correctly.
What to try
- Open the cartridge area.
- Press down gently on each ink cartridge so it is firmly seated.
- Close the cover and try again.
When it needs a technician
If the error continues with all cartridges seated, contact Epson support.
Which models show W-12
Epson documents this code for models including Expression XP-340, WorkForce WF-2930, WorkForce WF-110, Stylus NX330, Stylus NX420W.
Varies by model: On older Stylus NX330 and NX420W models, W-12 means the cartridge shown on the screen is not recognized; replace it (Epson recommends genuine Epson cartridges).
First steps for any printer error
- Write down the exact code before you do anything else — similar-looking codes often mean completely different things.
- Power the printer off, unplug it for a couple of minutes, then power it back on. A surprising number of transient errors clear here.
- Open the covers and check for paper scraps, packaging material, or anything blocking the carriage.
- Check the cartridges or tanks are genuine, correctly seated, and not empty.
- Confirm the printer is plugged directly into a wall outlet, not a power strip or extension lead.
- Check your model’s own manual — codes are model-specific, and the manual is the authority for your machine.
