HP Printer Failure: Printer Failure message
Also shows as: Printer Failure. There is a problem with the printer or ink system.
HP says this message means the printer or its ink system has hit an error, and the printer does not print. A stalled carriage is a common cause.
What to try
- With the printer on, unplug the power cord from the back of the printer.
- Open the carriage access door and remove debris such as crumpled paper or loose labels from the carriage path.
- Move the carriage by hand to each side to check that it moves freely, then close the door and reconnect power.
- Reset the printer: turn it off, unplug it from the wall, wait 60 seconds, plug it directly into a wall outlet, and turn it on.
When it needs a technician
If the message stays after clearing the carriage path and resetting, HP says to service or replace the printer.
Which models show Printer Failure
HP documents this code for models including HP OfficeJet Pro 276dw, HP OfficeJet 6600, HP OfficeJet Pro 6960, HP OfficeJet Pro 6970, HP OfficeJet 7610, HP OfficeJet Pro 8600, HP OfficeJet Pro 8610, HP OfficeJet Pro 8620.
Varies by model: On OfficeJet Pro 251dw and 276dw, HP also suggests checking cartridges for leaks and reseating the printhead when no code shows. When a code is shown with the message, HP says to power cycle and then call HP.
First steps for any printer error
- Write down the exact code before you do anything else β similar-looking codes often mean completely different things.
- Power the printer off, unplug it for a couple of minutes, then power it back on. A surprising number of transient errors clear here.
- Open the covers and check for paper scraps, packaging material, or anything blocking the carriage.
- Check the cartridges or tanks are genuine, correctly seated, and not empty.
- Confirm the printer is plugged directly into a wall outlet, not a power strip or extension lead.
- Check your modelβs own manual β codes are model-specific, and the manual is the authority for your machine.
