HP Ink System Failure: Ink System Failure

Also shows as: System Supply Problem; Supply System Problem

🧭 Fixable with care

HP says this message points to a problem with the ink system, such as blocked cartridge vents, cartridges with no ink, or a printhead that is not making good contact.

What to try

  1. For HP 178, 364, 564, 655, 862 and 902 to 935 cartridges: clean each cartridge vent with a pin to remove debris or label glue.
  2. For HP 932, 933, 936 to 938 and 950 to 969 cartridges: shake each cartridge to check it has ink, and replace any that are empty.
  3. If your printer has a printhead latch, reseat the printhead up to three times with the printer unplugged.
  4. Reset the printer: power off, unplug from the wall for 60 seconds, and plug directly into a wall outlet.
  5. Install a full new set of cartridges.

When it needs a technician

If the error remains after these steps, HP says to contact HP Support to replace the printhead or service the printer.

First steps for any printer error

  1. Write down the exact code before you do anything else β€” similar-looking codes often mean completely different things.
  2. Power the printer off, unplug it for a couple of minutes, then power it back on. A surprising number of transient errors clear here.
  3. Open the covers and check for paper scraps, packaging material, or anything blocking the carriage.
  4. Check the cartridges or tanks are genuine, correctly seated, and not empty.
  5. Confirm the printer is plugged directly into a wall outlet, not a power strip or extension lead.
  6. Check your model’s own manual β€” codes are model-specific, and the manual is the authority for your machine.
