Smart Lock Not Working? How to Get In and Fix It
Your smart lock app says connected but the lock won't open, or the battery is dead and you're locked out. Here's what to do.
If You Are Locked Out Right Now
Most smart locks have a physical key backup. Check if your smart lock has a keyhole โ August, Yale, and Schlage locks all include key cylinders. If you have the physical key, use it. If you do not have a key and the lock has a keypad, try the default access code from the installation manual. For locks with dead batteries, most brands have a 9-volt battery emergency terminal on the exterior. Press a standard 9-volt battery (the rectangular one) against the terminal contacts to temporarily power the lock long enough to enter your code.
Lock Won't Respond to App Commands
If the app shows connected but the lock does not move, check the battery level first. Low batteries cause erratic behavior before dying completely. Replace batteries and try again. Most smart locks use 4 AA batteries and show a low battery warning in the app weeks before dying. If batteries are fine, remove and re-add the lock in the app. For Bluetooth locks, make sure Bluetooth is enabled on your phone and you are within 30 feet. For WiFi locks, check that your home WiFi is working.
Lock Makes Grinding or Motor Sounds
If the lock motor runs but the deadbolt does not extend or retract fully, the alignment is off. The door may have shifted due to weather changes (wood expands and contracts with humidity) or settling. Check the alignment between the deadbolt and the strike plate on the door frame. If the bolt does not slide smoothly into the strike plate hole, loosen the strike plate screws and adjust its position. Also check for debris in the deadbolt mechanism and lubricate it with graphite powder, never liquid lubricant.
Keypad Not Accepting Codes
If the keypad lights up but rejects all codes, the lock may be in lockout mode after too many incorrect attempts. Wait 30 to 60 seconds and try again with the correct code. If you forgot your code, most locks can be reset to factory settings using a physical reset button on the interior side of the lock. This erases all codes and you will need to reprogram it through the app. Check your owner manual for the specific reset procedure for your brand.
