Check WiFi Signal Strength First

Ring doorbells need a strong WiFi signal because they stream video which requires significant bandwidth. Open the Ring app, tap your doorbell, then Device Health. Check the RSSI signal strength. Green (0 to minus 40) is good. Yellow (minus 41 to minus 60) is acceptable but may cause issues. Red (below minus 60) means your WiFi signal is too weak at the doorbell location. If signal is weak, move your router closer, add a WiFi extender near the front door, or use a Ring Chime Pro which acts as a WiFi extender specifically for Ring devices.

During Setup: Ring Won't Find WiFi Network

Make sure your phone is connected to the 2.4GHz network, not 5GHz. Ring doorbells only support 2.4GHz WiFi. If your router uses the same network name for both bands, temporarily disable 5GHz in your router settings during setup. Also check that your WiFi password does not contain special characters that the Ring app may not handle correctly. If setup repeatedly fails, try setting up from a different phone or tablet.

Ring Keeps Going Offline

If your Ring was working but keeps disconnecting, check the battery level in the Ring app (for battery models). A battery below 15 percent causes connectivity issues. For wired Ring doorbells, check that your existing doorbell transformer provides enough voltage โ€” Ring requires 16 to 24 volts AC. Many older homes have transformers that only provide 10 to 12 volts, which is insufficient. A replacement transformer costs about 15 dollars. Also reboot the Ring by pressing and holding the setup button for 20 seconds, then reconnecting through the app.

Factory Reset as Last Resort

If nothing else works, factory reset the Ring doorbell. For Ring Video Doorbell 2 and newer, press and hold the orange setup button on the back for 20 seconds until the front light flashes. For Ring Video Doorbell Pro, hold the setup button on the right side for 15 seconds. After reset, set up the device as new through the Ring app. Your previous recordings in the cloud are not lost โ€” they remain in your Ring account.

Pro Tips

โœ“Ring doorbells only work on 2.4GHz WiFi โ€” they do not support 5GHz bands
โœ“RSSI signal strength below minus 60 will cause frequent disconnects โ€” add a WiFi extender near the door
โœ“For wired models, check your doorbell transformer voltage โ€” Ring requires 16 to 24 volts AC
โœ“The Ring Chime Pro costs about 35 dollars and doubles as a WiFi extender for all your Ring devices
