Computer Running Slow? 10 Ways to Speed It Up
A sluggish computer does not need replacing. These 10 fixes bring aging PCs and Macs back to life.
Fix 1: Restart Your Computer
If you have not restarted in days, do it now. Restarting clears temporary files and stops memory leaks. On Windows, hold Shift while clicking Restart for a full reboot.
Fix 2: Disable Startup Programs
On Windows: Ctrl+Shift+Esc, click Startup, disable anything you do not need. On Mac: System Preferences, Users and Groups, Login Items. Most people can disable 60โ80% of their startup programs.
Fix 3: Free Up Disk Space
A nearly full hard drive dramatically slows everything. You need at least 10โ15% free space. Delete old downloads, empty the recycle bin.
Fix 4: Upgrade to an SSD
This is the single biggest performance upgrade. Replacing a traditional hard drive with a solid-state drive makes everything 5โ10x faster. A 500GB SSD costs $40โ60.
Fix 5: Add More RAM
If your computer has less than 8GB of RAM, adding more is a cheap and effective upgrade. 8GB is the minimum for comfortable modern use; 16GB is ideal.
