WiFi Connected But No Internet? Fix It in 5 Steps
Your computer shows connected to WiFi but says No Internet. This 5-step fix works every time on Windows and Mac.
What Connected But No Internet Means
Your device has a valid WiFi connection to the router, but the router either cannot reach the internet or your device is not getting a valid IP/DNS configuration. The fix depends on whether the issue is with your device only or all devices on the network. Test by checking another phone or tablet. If everything has no internet, the problem is the router or ISP. If only one device is affected, the problem is on that device.
Step 1: Restart Your Router Properly
Unplug your router and modem from power. Wait 60 seconds. Plug in the modem first and wait 2 minutes for it to fully connect to your ISP. Then plug in the router and wait another 2 minutes. This proper power cycle sequence resolves about 50 percent of no-internet issues because the modem re-authenticates with your ISP and the router gets a fresh connection.
Step 2: Flush DNS and Reset Network on Your Device
On Windows, open Command Prompt as Administrator and run these commands in order: ipconfig /flushdns, then ipconfig /release, then ipconfig /renew, then netsh winsock reset. Restart your computer. On Mac, open Terminal and type sudo dscacheutil -flushcache and press Enter. This clears stale network data that may be preventing your device from connecting properly.
Step 3: Change Your DNS Server
Your ISP DNS server may be down. Switch to Google DNS or Cloudflare DNS. On Windows, go to Settings, Network and Internet, WiFi, click your network, click Hardware Properties, then Edit DNS Settings. Set it to Manual and enter 8.8.8.8 for primary and 8.8.4.4 for secondary. On Mac, go to System Settings, Network, WiFi, Details, DNS, and add the same addresses. This bypasses any DNS issues with your ISP.
Step 4: Disable VPN or Proxy
VPNs and proxy settings often cause no-internet issues when they malfunction. On Windows, go to Settings, Network and Internet, Proxy, and make sure Use a Proxy Server is turned off. If you have a VPN app, disconnect it or try a different server. Some free VPN extensions in Chrome can also interfere with all internet traffic even when Chrome is closed.
