Light Switch Not Working? How to Diagnose and Fix It
A broken light switch is usually a simple fix. Here is how to diagnose the problem.
Quick Checks First
Check if the light bulb has burned out, check the circuit breaker, and check if there is a second switch controlling the same light (three-way switches).
Signs of a Faulty Switch
A bad switch may: buzz or crackle, feel warm to the touch, not click firmly, or work intermittently. Any buzzing or warmth means replace it immediately.
How to Replace a Light Switch
Turn off the breaker, confirm power is off with a voltage tester, remove the cover plate, unscrew the switch, note which wires connect where, disconnect and connect to the new switch. A standard switch costs $2–5.
Three-Way Switch Issues
If one three-way switch stops working, the traveler wires may have come loose at either switch location. This is more complex to diagnose.
