What Is a GFCI Outlet

A GFCI outlet monitors electrical current. If it detects even a tiny imbalance, it cuts power in 1/40th of a second to prevent shock. Required in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, and outdoor areas.

How to Reset a GFCI

Press the RESET button firmly until it clicks. If it will not stay in, unplug everything on the circuit first, then press RESET. If it still will not stay, replace the outlet.

Why Your GFCI Keeps Tripping

Repeated tripping means a persistent ground fault. Common causes: moisture in an outdoor outlet box, a damaged appliance cord, or worn insulation on wiring.

GFCI Outlets Protect Downstream Outlets

One GFCI outlet can protect multiple standard outlets wired downstream. This is why a tripped GFCI in your bathroom can kill an outlet in the hallway.

Pro Tips

Test GFCI outlets monthly by pressing the TEST button
GFCI outlets last about 10 years
Never paint over GFCI buttons
