Outlet Not Working? 5 Things to Check Before Calling an Electrician
A dead outlet does not always mean an expensive repair. Check these 5 things first.
Check 1: The Circuit Breaker
The most common cause of a dead outlet is a tripped breaker. Go to your electrical panel and look for any breaker that is in the middle position between ON and OFF. Push it fully to OFF, then back to ON.
Check 2: GFCI Outlets
When a GFCI trips, it cuts power not just to itself but to all outlets downstream on the same circuit. Look for GFCI outlets in your bathrooms, kitchen, garage, and exterior — press the RESET button.
Check 3: The Outlet Itself
Try plugging in something you know works to confirm the outlet is truly dead. Also try both sockets — half-switched outlets are common.
Check 4: Loose Wiring
Turn off the breaker, remove the outlet cover plate, and check if any wires have come loose from the terminal screws.
Check 5: Switch-Controlled Outlets
Many homes have outlets controlled by a wall switch. Try toggling every light switch in the room while checking the outlet.
