iPhone: Use Find My

Go to iCloud.com/find on any browser or use the Find My app on another Apple device. Sign in with your Apple ID. Your iPhone will appear on a map with its last known location. From there you can play a sound (works even on silent), enable Lost Mode (locks the phone and displays a message), or erase the phone remotely if you believe it was stolen. Even if the battery is dead, Find My shows the last location before it powered off.

Android: Use Google Find My Device

Go to google.com/android/find on any browser and sign in with your Google account. Or say "Hey Google, find my phone" to any Google device. You can play a sound at full volume (works even on silent), secure the device with a lock and message, or erase all data remotely. The phone must have location services enabled and be connected to WiFi or mobile data for real-time tracking.

What If the Phone Is Off or Dead?

Both Find My iPhone and Google Find My Device show the last known location before the phone lost power. For newer iPhones with the U1 chip, Find My works even when the phone is completely off by using nearby Apple devices in the Find My network. For Android, some Samsung phones have a similar offline finding feature through SmartThings Find.

If You Think It Was Stolen

Do not go to the location yourself โ€” contact local police and provide them with the location data. Enable Lost Mode or lock the device immediately to prevent access to your data. Change your passwords for email, banking, and social media from another device. Contact your carrier to suspend the SIM card so the thief cannot make calls or use your data plan.

Prevent Future Loss

Enable Find My iPhone or Google Find My Device NOW before you lose your phone. Set up a strong passcode or biometric lock. Enable automatic cloud backup so your photos and data are safe even if the phone is lost forever. Consider a Tile or AirTag in your phone case for Bluetooth tracking.

Pro Tips

โœ“Call your phone from another number โ€” someone nearby may answer
โœ“Check Google Maps Timeline or Apple Significant Locations for recent movement
โœ“If at home, say "Hey Siri" or "Hey Google" to make it respond audibly
โœ“File a police report if stolen โ€” your carrier may need it to blacklist the IMEI number
