Brother Unable to Print 46: Ink absorber almost full

Also shows as: Print Unable 46, Machine Error 46

πŸ§‘β€πŸ”§ Needs servicing

Brother says "Print Unable 46" means the machine's ink absorbers are almost full. The absorbers hold ink that has been purged from the print head during cleaning.

What to try

  1. Press Stop/Exit to get back to the main screen.
  2. Press # and * together to see the ROM version (the first two characters on the top row).
  3. If the version is OA, OB, OC or OD, back up or print any stored faxes, then run the Firmware Update Tool from your model's Downloads page, since Brother says the message may have appeared in error.
  4. Do not turn off the machine while the firmware update runs.
  5. If the version is OE or higher, or the message returns after updating, arrange service.

When it needs a technician

If the message stays after a firmware update (or no update is needed), Brother directs you to an Authorized Service Center or Brother Customer Service to replace the ink absorber.

Which models show Unable to Print 46

Brother documents this code for models including MFC-250C, MFC-290C, MFC-490CW.

Varies by model: On other older inkjets Brother shows the same condition as "Machine Error 46" and says an engineer must replace the absorber pad; no firmware step applies there.

First steps for any printer error

  1. Write down the exact code before you do anything else β€” similar-looking codes often mean completely different things.
  2. Power the printer off, unplug it for a couple of minutes, then power it back on. A surprising number of transient errors clear here.
  3. Open the covers and check for paper scraps, packaging material, or anything blocking the carriage.
  4. Check the cartridges or tanks are genuine, correctly seated, and not empty.
  5. Confirm the printer is plugged directly into a wall outlet, not a power strip or extension lead.
  6. Check your model’s own manual β€” codes are model-specific, and the manual is the authority for your machine.
