How to Change a Flat Tire (Step-by-Step for Beginners)
Got a flat tire? Do not panic. Here is exactly how to change it safely in under 20 minutes, even if you have never done it before.
What You Need
Every car comes with a spare tire, a jack, and a lug wrench. They are usually in the trunk under a cover or mat. Before you start, pull over to a flat, solid surface away from traffic. Turn on your hazard lights and apply the parking brake.
Step 1: Loosen the Lug Nuts
While the tire is still on the ground, use the lug wrench to loosen each lug nut by turning counterclockwise. Do not remove them completely yet, just break them loose about half a turn each. If they are too tight, stand on the wrench to use your body weight.
Step 2: Jack Up the Car
Place the jack under the vehicle frame near the flat tire. Check your owner manual for the exact jack point. Raise the car until the flat tire is about 6 inches off the ground. Never put any part of your body under the vehicle while it is on a jack.
Step 3: Swap the Tires
Remove the lug nuts completely, pull off the flat tire, and mount the spare. Hand-tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to ensure even pressure. Lower the car back down, then tighten the lug nuts firmly with the wrench. Drive to a tire shop within 50 miles as spare tires are not meant for highway speeds.
