My iPad is only 3 years old but it has become extremely slow and laggy. Apps take forever to open. Is it too old already?
A 3-year-old iPad should still perform well — it is likely bogged down by accumulated cache, a nearly full storage drive, or too many background processes. Start by checking storage: go to Settings, General, iPad Storage. If you have less than 3 to 5 GB free, that is causing the slowness. Delete old apps you do not use, clear Safari cache (Settings, Safari, Clear History and Website Data), and offload unused apps (Settings, General, iPad Storage, Enable Offload Unused Apps — this removes the app but keeps its data). Next, close all background apps by swiping up from the bottom and swiping away all open app windows. Restart your iPad by holding the Power button and sliding to power off, then turning it back on after 30 seconds. Disable visual effects that consume processing power: go to Settings, Accessibility, Motion, turn on Reduce Motion. Also turn off Background App Refresh for all non-essential apps: Settings, General, Background App Refresh. If your iPad is running the latest iPadOS version and it is slow, the newest OS may be too demanding for your hardware. Unfortunately, Apple does not allow downgrading — but the tips above should restore most of your lost performance.
