Common Causes of Clogged Drains

Kitchen drains clog from grease, food particles, and soap buildup. Bathroom drains clog from hair, soap scum, and toothpaste residue. The location of the clog determines the best fix. If water drains slowly, the blockage is partial and easier to clear. If water does not drain at all, you have a full blockage that may need more aggressive methods.

Method 1: Boiling Water

The simplest fix that works surprisingly often. Boil a full kettle and pour it directly down the drain in 2โ€“3 stages, waiting a few seconds between each pour. The heat dissolves soap and grease buildup. Important: only use this on metal pipes. Boiling water can damage PVC pipes and loosen joints.

Method 2: Baking Soda and Vinegar

Pour half a cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by half a cup of white vinegar. Cover the drain immediately โ€” the fizzing action breaks up organic buildup. Wait 30 minutes, then flush with hot water. This is safe for all pipe types and works well on partial clogs.

Method 3: Plunger

A cup plunger creates suction that dislodges blockages. Fill the sink with a few inches of water, place the plunger over the drain, and pump vigorously 15โ€“20 times. The pressure change pushes and pulls the clog loose.

Method 4: Drain Snake

A drain snake or auger is a flexible metal cable that physically breaks through clogs. Insert it into the drain and turn the handle clockwise. When you feel resistance, you have hit the clog. Keep turning to break it apart, then pull the snake out. Flush with hot water. You can buy a basic drain snake for under $10 at any hardware store.

When to Call a Professional

If none of these methods work, the clog may be deep in your main sewer line, or there could be a structural issue like tree root intrusion or a collapsed pipe. Multiple drains clogging simultaneously is a sign of a main line problem. At that point, a professional with a camera inspection tool can diagnose the exact issue and location.

Pro Tips

โœ“Never use chemical drain cleaners like Drano โ€” they corrode pipes over time
โœ“Install drain screens to catch hair and food particles before they cause clogs
โœ“Run hot water for 30 seconds after each use to prevent grease buildup
โœ“Clean your drain stoppers monthly
