How to Scan From Your Printer to Your Computer (Any Brand)
Scanning documents from your printer to your computer is easier than you think. Here is how to do it on HP, Canon, Epson, and Brother.
Method 1: Windows Scan App (Easiest)
Windows has a built-in scanning tool that works with almost every printer. Search for Windows Scan in the Start menu (or download it free from the Microsoft Store if not installed). Open it, select your printer from the scanner dropdown, choose the file type (PDF for documents, PNG or JPEG for photos), and click Preview to see what will be scanned. Adjust the crop area if needed, then click Scan. The file saves to your Pictures, Scans folder by default.
Method 2: Manufacturer Apps
Each printer brand has its own scanning app that offers more features. HP Smart (free from Microsoft Store or App Store) works for all HP printers and supports scan to email, cloud, and multiple pages to one PDF. Canon IJ Scan Utility handles Canon printers with advanced color and resolution settings. Epson Scan 2 offers document feeder support and OCR text recognition. Brother iPrint and Scan supports wireless scanning from Brother printers. Download the app for your brand and follow the setup wizard.
Method 3: Scan From the Printer Itself
Most modern printers can initiate scans from their touch screen or control panel. Place your document face down on the glass or in the document feeder. On the printer, select Scan, then choose your computer from the list of destinations. Select the file type and press Start. The scanned file appears on your computer automatically, usually in your Documents or Pictures folder.
Scanning to Your Phone
All major printer brands support scanning to your phone via their mobile app. Install HP Smart, Canon PRINT, Epson iPrint, or Brother iPrint on your phone. Connect to the same WiFi as your printer. Open the app, select Scan, and it will use your printer scanner to create a digital copy sent directly to your phone. From there you can email it, save it to cloud storage, or share it.
