Windows Not Shutting Down? Here Is How to Fix It
Your computer hangs on the Shutting Down screen forever. Here are the reasons and quick fixes for Windows shutdown problems.
Common Causes of Shutdown Problems
Windows shutdown hangs are usually caused by a program that refuses to close, a Windows update installing during shutdown, Fast Startup conflicts, or a driver that fails to release hardware properly. The spinning dots on the shutdown screen mean Windows is waiting for something to finish before it can safely power off.
Fix 1: Disable Fast Startup
Fast Startup is a Windows feature that saves the system state to disk during shutdown for faster boot times. It causes problems when drivers or hardware do not support the hybrid shutdown properly. To disable it: open Control Panel, Power Options, click Choose What the Power Buttons Do, click Change Settings That Are Currently Unavailable, and uncheck Turn On Fast Startup. Click Save Changes. This forces a clean shutdown every time.
Fix 2: Check for Stuck Updates
Windows often installs updates during shutdown. If an update gets stuck, the shutdown hangs indefinitely. If you see a message like Updating or Working On Updates, let it run for up to an hour before forcing shutdown. If it happens repeatedly, go to Settings, Windows Update, Update History, and check for failed updates. Click Retry on any failed updates to resolve them.
Fix 3: Force Shutdown as Last Resort
If your computer is stuck on the shutdown screen for more than 15 minutes, press and hold the power button for 10 seconds to force it off. This is safe for occasional use. After force shutdown, Windows may run a disk check on the next boot. Let it complete. If the shutdown problem happens repeatedly, run sfc /scannow from an elevated Command Prompt to check for corrupted system files that may be causing the hang.
