Printer Prints Blank Pages? Here Is What to Do
Your printer feeds paper through but nothing comes out. The ink is full. Here is why and how to fix blank page printing.
Why Blank Pages Happen With Full Ink
Blank pages with full cartridges mean the ink is not reaching the paper. The three most common causes are clogged print head nozzles from dried ink, cartridges that are not making electrical contact, and protective tape or clips that were left on new cartridges. Less common causes include driver issues that send the print job to the wrong tray or a firmware mismatch after a cartridge replacement.
Run the Print Head Cleaning Cycle
Every inkjet printer has a built-in cleaning utility. On HP, go to the printer control panel, Setup, Tools, Clean Printhead. On Canon, go to Maintenance, Cleaning. On Epson, go to Setup, Maintenance, Head Cleaning. Run the cleaning cycle 2 to 3 times, printing a test page between each run. Each cycle uses a small amount of ink to flush the nozzles. If the test page shows improvement but is not perfect, run it one more time.
Reseat or Replace Cartridges
Open the printer lid and remove all cartridges. Check each one for the orange protective tape or clip. New cartridges sometimes have a small piece of tape covering the nozzle or the electrical contacts. If you find tape, remove it. Clean the copper or gold electrical contacts on each cartridge with a dry lint-free cloth. Reinstall each cartridge firmly until you hear a click. If you are using third-party or refilled cartridges, try swapping in a genuine manufacturer cartridge to rule out compatibility issues.
Check Your Print Driver Settings
Sometimes the driver is configured to print with the wrong color profile or paper type. Open your print dialog, click Properties or Preferences, and check that the paper type matches what is loaded. Also verify that color printing is enabled and not set to draft or economy mode, which can produce nearly invisible output on some printers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I unclog print heads with rubbing alcohol?
Yes, for removable print heads. Remove the print head, soak the bottom in a shallow dish of isopropyl alcohol or warm distilled water for 15 minutes, then blot dry with a lint-free cloth. Reinstall and run a test print. Do not use tap water as minerals can cause further clogging.
