How to Stop Chrome Notification Spam (Those Annoying Pop-Ups)
Random pop-up ads appearing even when Chrome is closed? Here is how to stop Chrome notification spam permanently.
Why You Are Getting Notification Spam
At some point, you visited a website that asked to send you notifications and you clicked Allow. Now that website sends you spam notifications disguised as system alerts, fake virus warnings, or ads. These appear even when Chrome is closed because Chrome runs notification services in the background. This is not a virus. It is a browser feature being abused by spammy websites.
Step 1: Remove Spam Notification Permissions
Open Chrome, click the three dots menu, select Settings, then Privacy and Security, then Site Settings, then Notifications. Under Allowed to Send Notifications, you will see a list of websites. Any site you do not recognize is likely the source of spam. Click the three dots next to each suspicious site and select Remove or Block. Remove every unfamiliar site.
Step 2: Block Future Notification Requests
In the same Notifications settings page, change the default setting from Sites Can Ask to Send Notifications to Don't Allow Sites to Send Notifications. This prevents any website from ever asking you for notification permission again. You will never see those annoying Allow/Block pop-ups on websites. If a legitimate site needs notifications, you can manually add it later.
Step 3: Install uBlock Origin
Install the uBlock Origin extension from the Chrome Web Store. It blocks ads, pop-ups, and many malicious notification prompts before they even appear. It is free, open-source, and uses minimal system resources. uBlock Origin is more effective and lightweight than other ad blockers like AdBlock Plus. After installing, it works immediately with no configuration needed.
