My garage door won't open. The motor runs but the door does not move, or the remote and wall button don't work at all.
If the motor runs but the door does not move, the drive mechanism has disconnected. Most garage door openers have a red emergency release cord hanging from the track. This cord disconnects the door from the opener so you can open it manually. If someone recently pulled this cord (often during a power outage), the door is disconnected. To reconnect, close the door fully by hand, then pull the release cord toward the opener until you hear it snap back into place. Press the wall button and the opener should engage the door. If the motor does not run at all, check the outlet where the opener is plugged in by plugging in a lamp. Check the circuit breaker. If the wall button works but the remote does not, replace the remote batteries. If neither works, the motor control board may have failed. If the door starts to open but immediately reverses, the safety sensors at the bottom of the door frame may be misaligned — check that both sensors have steady lights and the lenses are clean. A blinking light on one sensor means it is not detecting the other sensor.
