Nest Thermostat Not Heating or Cooling? Troubleshooting Guide
Your Nest thermostat shows the right temperature but the HVAC won't respond. Here is how to fix the connection between Nest and your system.
Quick Fix: Power Cycle the Nest
Remove the Nest from its base plate by gently pulling it straight off. Wait 30 seconds. Push it back onto the base. This restarts the thermostat and re-establishes communication with your HVAC system. Also try restarting from the menu: go to Settings, Reset, Restart. This resolves about 30 percent of Nest issues where the thermostat loses communication with the HVAC control board.
Check for Wiring Issues
Pull the Nest off the base and look at the wire connections. Each wire should be fully inserted into the correct terminal and held securely. Common wiring problems include the C wire (common wire) not connected, which causes the Nest to lose power and go offline; wires that have slipped out of their terminals; and incorrect wire placement. Take a photo of the wiring and compare it to the wiring diagram in the Nest app under Settings, Equipment, Wiring Diagram.
System Not Detected
If the Nest shows your system as not detected, go to Settings, Equipment, and check what systems the Nest has identified. If heating or cooling shows as Not Detected, the Nest is not receiving the correct signal from your HVAC system. This is often a compatibility issue. Check nest.com/compatibility with your HVAC model number. Older or unusual HVAC systems may need a Nest C wire adapter (included with newer Nest models) or may not be compatible at all.
Delayed Message on Screen
If the Nest displays a Delayed message, it means the thermostat is protecting your HVAC system from short cycling by enforcing a minimum wait time between cycles. This is normal and usually lasts 5 to 10 minutes. If it shows Delayed for longer than 15 minutes, there may be a power issue. Check the battery level in Settings, Technical Info, Power. If Voc voltage is below 30 volts, the Nest is not receiving enough power from the HVAC system. This usually means you need a C wire installed.
