Cat Not Eating? When to Worry and What to Do
A cat refusing food for more than 24 hours needs attention. Here is how to tell if it is serious.
Common Causes
Stress, dental pain, hairballs, upper respiratory infection, dietary changes, or underlying illness. A cat that has not eaten in 24โ48 hours needs veterinary evaluation.
When It Is an Emergency
See a vet immediately if not eaten for 48+ hours, vomiting, lethargic, difficulty breathing, or is overweight (risk of fatty liver disease within 2โ3 days).
Home Remedies
Warm the food slightly to increase aroma. Try a different protein. Offer tuna water as an appetite stimulant. Make sure the bowl is clean and away from the litter box.
Gradual Food Transitions
Mix 25% new food with 75% old for 3 days, then 50/50 for 3 days, then 75/25 for 3 days. Sudden switches upset digestion.
